Overview
Zoom and In-person at UW Physics Building - Planetarium.
Please join us for a return visit from Dr. Adam Smercina, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Washington.
Dr. Smercina will start with a brief recap of some of his and others' work on Andromeda and Messier 33 overall using the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. With these telescopes, we're able to resolve these galaxies into millions of constituent stars; these populations of stars give us an "archaeological record" of how the galaxy has evolved over time. He will then talk about some exciting upcoming observations of the "Cigar Galaxy", Messier 82, which lives far beyond the environment of the Milky Way or Andromeda, as well as some of the progress for future space observatories.
Last year, we asked him to return to update us on his research. Please join us for this update in the UW Planetarium.
